Aegon Targaryen: all the info on the character of the House of the Dragon series

Who is Aegon Targaryen? If the future king of the Seven Kingdoms was introduced in episode 3 of the series House of the Dragon like an adorable little baby, fans of the show broadcast in France on OCS will quickly realize that as he grows up, the son of Viserys Targaryen has all the characteristics of the perfect tyrant: cruel, full of himself, obscene and disgusting. Aegon is also reminiscent of a famous character from the original series. Game Of Thrones.

The biography of Aegon Targaryen

Eldest son of King Viserys I Targaryen and his second wife Alicent Hightower, Aegon Targaryen is a lazy young man who prefers to spend his time enjoying the pleasures of life, namely food, alcohol and women, rather than thinking about the Iron Throne. He is also the brother of Aemond, Daeron and Helaena Targaryen, and has a half-sister Rhaenyra Targeryen, with which he does not get along at all. It is the latter who was chosen by her father to succeed him on the throne initially. At the age of 15, Prince Aegon married his sister Helaena, who was only 13, and together they had twins the following year: Jaehaerys and Jaehaera Targaryen.

But the enmity between Queen Alicent and her daughter-in-law Rhaenyra only increases and, soon, the two families are torn into two clans: the Blacks for Princess Rhaenyra and the Greens on Queen Alicent’s side. And it was when King Viserys died in the year 129 that everything changed. Helped by Ser Criston Cole, Aegon will finally be convinced to claim the Crown, to prevent Rhaenyra from seizing power. Thanks to a plot cleverly carried out by Queen Alicent and her relatives, Aegon will be crowned by the restricted council, taking advantage that Rhaenyra, then pregnant, is in Dragonstone. Prince Aegon becomes Aegon II Targaryen, King of the Seven Crowns, marking the start of the dance of the dragonsthe great civil war between the two branches of House Targaryen.

Who plays Aegon Targaryen?

As viewers discovered baby Aegon Targaryen in Episode 3 of the series, it’s Ty Tennant who lends her features to the character as of episode 6, due to the ten-year time jump in the story. The 20-year-old British comedian was immersed in the world of cinema very early on as he is the son of actress Georgia Moffett and adopted son of the actor David Tennant (Doctor Who, Harry Potter). Before having the heavy task of interpreting Prince Aegon, the young man distinguished himself in the cinema in several large productions: War of the Worlds, Tolkien (the American biopic dedicated to the author of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit)or the series in which his father played, Around the world in 80 days.

He then obtains a secondary role in the feature film Dunkirk of Christopher Nolan in 2017. More recently, he was also part of the cast of Tolkien followed, the same year, by the film The king (2019). To play the formidable Aegon Targaryen, the young man recently admitted that he was inspired by another character well known to fans of the universe of George RR Martin : Joffrey Baratheoninterpreted by the unforgettable Jack Gleeson on screen in the series Game Of Thrones. “The showrunners invited me to compare myself with certain Game of Thrones characters, including Joffrey. But Aegon is not a pure psychopath, he is much more complex. His decisions are due to his insecurity, confusion and rage. He’s just bitterly confused and mentally ill”said Tom Glynn-Carney during an interview.

Why We Love To Hate Aegon Targaryen

Whether Game Of Thrones had terrified us with the cruelty of Joffrey Baratheonthe succession is easily ensured with Aegon Targaryen in the spin-off House of the Dragon. The two anti-heroes have many elements in common: the same blond hair, the same wickedness and insolence, a protective mother ready to do anything for her offspring to seize power… Prince Aegon is just as despicable and cruel with his own – as when he attacks his little brother Aemond – than disgusting with others, especially women. Love him or hate him, Aegon Targaryen will not leave anyone indifferent!
