Hannibal Hopkins & Sir Anthony (Arte): beginnings to (re)discover

And that’s one of the highlights of this documentary: going back to the actor’s early years before he was a star. The doc also opens with an astonishing document where Anthony Hopkins declares very sure of himself and while the general public does not know him: “I like the front of the stage. Big roles. I’m not interested in being deserving. I’m not interested in being virtuous. In sacrificing myself for the good of the troupe. I’m made like that. It’s my megalomaniac selfishness, I guess. I’m not interested in experimentation. Obeying the director’s finger and eye. For me it’s bullshit ” . A claimed megalomania that served him from the start of his career as a theater actor, where he was quickly spotted by another giant in 1965, Sir Laurence Olivier. Then began an incredible career on stage where he played all the greatest roles in the repertoire, especially Shakespearean ones. At the same time, he launches an assault on the cinema with more or less success. He is still spotted by David Lynch to play Doctor Frederick Treves in Elephant Man in 1980. If the film is a worldwide success, the film career ofHopkins doesn’t take off though.
