Hellboy: when David Harbor asked Ryan Reynolds if he was going to “survive” the film

In 2019, David Harbor wears the reboot of “Hellboy” directed by Neil Marshall. Aware that the film is going to crash, the actor calls Ryan Reynolds in distress to find out if his career is ruined.

David Harbour: from Steven Spielberg to Stranger Things

After his debut on Broadway, David Harbor tried his luck at the cinema. From his first films, the actor collaborated with renowned directors such as Steven Spielberg (War of the Worlds), Ang Lee (The Secret of Brokeback Mountain) or even Sam Mendes (The Rebel Weddings).

He then plays a psychopath opposite Liam Neeson in Walk between the tombs and a corrupt cop opposite Denzel Washington in Equalizerbefore being propelled to the front of the stage thanks to Stranger Things.

A major character in the series that made David Harbor a star, Sheriff Jim Hopper watches over Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) as well as the other Hawkins children, and forms a particularly endearing duo with Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder). Back in the fourth season, which is currently a hit on Netflix, he appears transformed, his face emaciated, and tries to escape from a Russian prison where a fearsome creature is hiding…

The “very complicated” experience ofHellboy

In parallel with Stranger Things and his colossal success, David Harbor participated in several feature films, such as Tyler Rake and Black Widow. The actor is also wearing the reboot ofHellboy directed by Neil Marshall and released in 2019. A film that pales in comparison to the two parts orchestrated by Guillermo del Toro, and whose headliner keeps a very bad memory.

Asked by QG for the promotion of the last two episodes of season 4 of Stranger Thingsthe actor confided:

It was a very complicated experience because I expected a lot. I really like Mike Mignola (the creator ofHellboy, note), I like this character. And then when it started, even when the project was announced, I immediately realized that people didn’t want this character to be reinvented. I was too naive and optimistic about what we were going to do.

The phone call to Ryan Reynolds

On the day of the release, David Harbor understands that the blockbuster will collapse at the box office. Which is indeed the case, since it brings in only $55 million in worldwide revenue, for an estimated budget of $50 million according to Box Office Mojo. Panicked, the actor calls Ryan Reynolds, who has already been there before his big comeback with Dead Pool :

I know him a little. I called him and I was like, “Hey man, I just need to know something. Do you remember Green Lantern ? Huge flop for you. What the fuck does it do? Because I think that’s what’s going to happen to me now. Will it be okay for me? Am I going to survive this?”

“Adorable”Ryan Reynolds apparently took the time to reassure his colleague, who has since largely overcome this failure.
