“Merlina”, the new Tim Burton series for Netflix, premiered

Created in the 1930s by cartoonist Charles Addams, “The Addams Family” has been a benchmark in American pop culture. He had a television series in the 1960s and later two films in the 1990s starring Anjelica Huston, Raúl Juliá and Christina Ricci. These last two projects are perhaps the most remembered by the public.

Most recently, Universal Studios decided to make an animated film about the dark and disturbing family in 2019. With a great voice cast led by Óscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Finn Wolfhard, the studio renewed for a sequel in 2021.

Now, the dark tone around each character, the relationship between the supernatural and the human, or the franchise’s twisted sense of humor sooner or later was going to fall into the hands of the person who perhaps knows those elements best in Hollywood: Tim Burton.

Now, with the help of Burton and Netflix, this character came to the small screen yesterday. The eight-episode series is a coming-of-age story, according to the streaming platform.

“The series is a supernaturally infused mystery that traces the young woman’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy,” the company said in a statement.

Great inspiration to direct a series

“I think all families are weird, and the Addams Family really symbolizes how I feel about them. I have never met one who did not have a strange nature. And, in particular, I love Merlina. Obviously, I’m not a teenager, but I think that in my past life I could have been, because when I read this, I feel that she shares my vision of the world. That was what fascinated me about the script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. I felt like they had written it for me,” Burton said.

And it is that if you compare the first tape of Los locos Addams with Beetlejuice or The scissorhands man, you will see a lot in common. Misunderstood beings living in a dark bubble within a colorful outdoor environment.

It was because of this that one family member in particular caught the attention of the filmmaker fully. Merlina, the eldest daughter, became the great inspiration for him to direct a television series for the first time.

Starring Jenna Ortega, a new adaptation of the great 64 classic came to the small screen, in which the young woman with braids and a black dress goes to a secondary school designed for monsters and deranged young people. Mermaids, werewolves, vampires and gargoyles will be her classmates.

The show explores never-before-seen aspects of the teenager. Watching her fall in love, socialize or stop her psychopathic impulse to have a “normal” life make the production a complete journey into the unknown.

Its main actress had the great challenge of reincarnating the character that had already been played by Lisa Loring (1964) and Christina Ricci (1991-1998). Keeping her face without noticeable expressions, but still conveying something, was Ortega’s task.

“She is not totally expressionless, but in the midst of that coldness, her gaze becomes deep as an ocean. It was so amazing to see her. The truth, for me, seemed like an impossible challenge; however, she did. It was like she could read every character’s mind, almost like she knew what we were thinking. She was pretty cool,” highlighted Emma Myers, who plays Enid Sinclair (Merlina’s roommate at school).

Merlina’s strange powers

The fiction follows the years of Merlina Addams as a student, as she tries to master her emerging psychic ability and tries to solve the mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago.

“The series is a detective mystery steeped in supernatural elements about Merlina’s years as a student at Nunca Más Academy. It follows Merlina’s attempts to master her budding psychic ability, stop a monstrous murder spree that has terrorized the town and solve the paranormal mystery in which his parents found themselves involved a quarter of a century ago. And all this while she manages her new, and extremely complicated, relationships in Nunca Más ”, she says in the synopsis.

The ageless nostalgics will say that this Merlina is not “canonical” like that of the actress Carolyn Jones. Others will proclaim that Christina Ricci’s Merlina was more powerful on a dramatic and humorous level, the truth is that it will be an opportunity to discover more about the craziest family on the screen.
