The Russos shared their excitement for the success of The Gray Man, and for turning it into an expanding universe.
The public reaction to The Gray Man was nothing short of phenomenal. We appreciate so much the enthusiasm that fans all over the world had for this film. With so many fantastic characters in the film, we always thought The Gray Man was part of a larger universe, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re thrilled to be talking about soon. The Gray Man is already ready for a franchise because it is based on a series of books. We always think this way, because we like long-term storytelling. Most of our careers have been long-term storytelling: all of our television work, all of our Marvel work.
The comment from Scott Stuber, in charge of Netflix original films.
With The Gray Man, the Russos offered an extraordinary show that audiences around the world loved. We are thrilled to continue to collaborate with them and the AGBO teams as they build the universe of The Gray Man.
As for the spinoff, the most eligible characters are Ana de Armas’ Dani Miranda, but we wouldn’t be surprised by a spinoff dedicated to the “Lone Wolf” starring Indian actor Dhanush, who was on the set of the film and won his second National Award for Best Actor (the Indian equivalent of an Oscar) for his performance in Asuran (2019). The spinoff will be developed by the writers of Deadpool And Welcome to Zombieland Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. The duo of authors also wrote the dystopian thriller for Netflix Spiderhead with Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller and the action thriller 6 Underground by Michael Bay.
“The Gray Man” centers on Gosling as a former inmate-turned-murderer in the pay of the CIA, who after “piercing” a target discovers compromising evidence and is hunted down by his former CIA colleague, psychopath Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans). The film also stars Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Alfre Woodard and Billy Bob Thornton.
