Boycotting the Football World Cup, due to the air conditioning of stadiums in Qatar, would have no effect on greenhouse gas emissions. This is what the Minister of Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, said on Sunday.“I do not believe that boycotting the World Cup unfortunately changes the greenhouse gas emissions of this event”she said, guest of the RTL-Le Figaro-LCI Grand Jury. “There are teams that have been preparing for years. This decision was made in a different climatic context“, Argued the Minister in reference to the awarding in 2010 of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

A media release that was not at all to the taste of several associations and environmentalists. Many petitions calling for a boycott of the World Cup are emerging on the web.

Calls for a boycott are increasing

In summer, the thermometer can reach 50 degrees in the small Gulf state. This is also one of the reasons why its selection in 2010 as host of the event caused controversy. The world of football is increasingly criticized for its inaction, as recently recalled by the scandal created by the PSG coach and his player Kylian Mbappé. It is considered above ground and this World Cup worsens this image.

This statement was therefore strongly taken back. Calls for a boycott of the World Cup in Qatar are increasing. Le Quotidien de la Réunion has just taken the drastic decision not to cover the World Cup in Qatar at all. “The daily sports department has offered to take a strong position that is in line with our values”, explains its director Vincent Vibert to our colleagues from franceinfo.“The decision was made in less than five minutes. We said to ourselves: we totally boycott the event”.

On Twitter, the #BoycottQatar2022 denounces the holding of the event, despite the air-conditioned stadiums and the deaths of workers on the construction sites. Coalition “Red card for Qatar”is also indignant. “Footballers, staff or federation members: refuse to be complicit in bloody crimes and total ecocide. Refuse to be the instruments of promotion of a psychopathic system which places competition above any moral and humanist consideration: boycott the World Cup in Qatar! »can we read in their press release.

“So, friend, friend, you who love football, you who cannot wall yourself in complicit silence, do what you know how to do best: encourage them! Be behind them, support them and, in turn, invite them to speak out and make football a political battleground to denounce slavery, ecocide, privatization and corruption.”adds the coalition, created to fight against this World Cup in Qatar.

Some athletes are also indignant

In early August 2022, former world champion Philipp Lahm (winner in 2014 with the German team) announced boycott the World Cup.“I am not part of the delegation, I don’t want to go there as a supporter. I prefer to follow the tournament from home. Human rights should play a greater role in the awarding of a tournament”he explained.

Legend of French football and Manchester United, Éric Cantona, known for his outspokenness, also opposed this World Cup in Qatar. “I will not watch a single game of this World Cup. It costs me because since I was a kid it’s an event that I adore, that I wait for and that I watch with passion! But let’s be honest with ourselves! This World Cup makes no sense! Worse it is an aberration! » he commented.

Speeches that are reminiscent of that of Vincent Lindon. The actor had judged this World Cup of “repulsive” on the set of “C à vous”. “I would love to turn into a great footballer and do a press conference, to say ‘Here, I’ve had the Ballon d’Or X times, I’m extremely in demand, I earn a lot, a lot of money, I’ve made the decision not to go to the World Cup, without telling my coach or my country, it’s my decision. Gentlemen, ladies’ and I get up”, he detailed.
