It happened in Ecuador and the femicide is on the run. They believe that he passed through Panama and are eagerly looking for him

The Ecuadorian authorities are eagerly searching for Lieutenant Germán Fernando Cáceres Salto, who has become one of the most wanted men in that country as the main suspect in the femicide of lawyer María Belén Bernal.

The lawyer, who was Salto’s wife, disappeared on September 11 of this year when, according to Ecuadorian newspapers, she entered the Higher Police School located on the outskirts of Quito, where her husband worked as an instructor. It was the last time they saw her.

Ten days later, on September 21, the judicial authorities of Ecuador found the body of María on the Casitagua hill, in Quito.

According to the Ecuadorian press, the first to report the disappearance of María was the lieutenant himself, but since he gave some versions that did not convince the Police, he was detained and after 8 hours at the prosecutor’s office, he was released.

After talking with his family who were waiting for him outside the prosecutor’s office, Salto left on a motorcycle and since then his whereabouts have been unknown.

The Ecuadorian authorities do not rule out that the suspect remains in Colombia where he traveled or has passed through Panama.

Who was Maria?

María was a trial lawyer who dedicated several years of her career to criminal law and married Cáceres in 2017, after meeting him when he came to the rescue of her and her family after they had been robbed.

‘We had an emergency, at home they robbed us, that’s where she met him. He assisted us as a policeman and after that they continued to hang out, seeing each other. He fell in love with her, they went to live together and then they got married,’ Elizabeth Otavalo, María’s mother, told a television program.

He narrated that he always saw a normal relationship between his daughter and the lieutenant.

“Actually a happy relationship, I don’t know when that monster is activated in him,” said the woman.

While the fugitive began his police career in 2015 with the rank of cadet in the Quitumbe district in Quito, Pichincha province. From 2018 to 2020 he became a second lieutenant under the preventive police position, but in different places: Guayaquil, Quito and Loreto (Orellana).

In 2021 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. At the time of María’s murder, he held the position of instructor at the Higher Police School, where his wife, María Belén Bernal, was last seen on September 11, 2022.

The Police said that Cáceres had passed all the psychological tests and had no history of sanctions and did not raise suspicions about his behavior.

Ecuador’s judicial authorities have assured the press that they will not rest until they bring the “murderer to justice.

The Police said that María’s entrance to the Higher Police School was recorded on the video surveillance cameras, but not her exit. For this crime there is a cadet detained who assured that she heard screams, blows and kicks in Cáceres’ room for 20 minutes. Sánchez was linked to the investigation and remains detained as a suspect in the case. She maintained a loving relationship with Salto.

Another witness said that he heard noises in the room and got up to see what was happening and looked into Cáceres’ room, which was on, knocked on the door and opened it.

“I visualized two people lying horizontally on the bed, but I couldn’t see their faces,” he said.

He fell in love with her, then they got married. In fact, a happy relationship, I don’t know when that monster is activated in him,’ the victim’s mother recounted.
