The goal is to make the theater more and more the home of everyone, without distinctions, obstacles or barriers, physical or cultural, thus demonstrating how theatrical language is able to overcome all differences, making it accessible to everyone, always. The watchwords through which to achieve this result are inclusiveness, accessibility, sociability, community. The same words on which the theatrical movement called Teatro Patologico founded by Dario D’Ambrosi is based, which will arrive in Puglia from 11 to 13 January with the show “Medea” for three days of entertainment, meetings and reflections: on 11 January at Spadaro Theater in Massafra, January 12 in Lecce at the Apollo Theater and January 13 in Bisceglie at the Politeama Italia.
The Rai journalist Domenico Iannacone will accompany the Apulian tour of “Medea” by the Pathological Theater Company. work of the Company, demonstrating a great sensitivity for the Teatro Sociale and continuing to work with Dario D’ambrosi even later.
In the three days in Puglia Iannacone will talk with Dario D’Ambrosi, actor and director, founder of the Company. Among the leading avant-garde artists in Italy, D’Ambrosi was locked up in a mental hospital for 3 months to understand what his mental illness was. Of that experience Dario still makes it a life purpose. In Rome since 1992, the Pathological Theater welcomes people with mental illness who through acting find a way to communicate and get out of isolation. A one-of-a-kind experience that led to the creation of the first university course of the “Integrated Theater of Emotion” intended for those suffering from mental disorders.
“The debut in Puglia is an event that deeply excites me – begins D’Ambrosi -. This trip follows my debut in Germany, in the city of Freiburg, with my show «Everybody isn’t there» on the law 180. But it’s not only this, that makes me proud: following a long tour in the United States, in occasion of the celebrations for my 40th anniversary of my artistic debut at the famous Cafè La MaMa in New York – an Off-Off Broadway theater where actors of the caliber of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Peter Brook, Pina Bausch and many others – I was privileged to receive recognition at the United Nations in New York (UN) as ambassador for disability in the world; following this important moment, I then continued and concluded the tour in the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, with reruns of the show «Everyone is not there», with enthusiastic reviews and standing ovations repeated in every place”.

“Anyone who approaches the Pathological Theater is struck by it. And that’s what happened to me. In an instant I understood that I was faced with a unique experience in the world capable of overturning the concept of mental disability – adds Domenico Iannacone -. Dario D’Ambrosi through the theater makes his actors perform a real existential metamorphosis. The human experience, at times difficult and painful for each of them, merges with the strength of acting and becomes a real liberation of mind and body. I was lucky enough to be able to tell their personal stories in the documentary film L’Odyssey, broadcast on Rai3, and I confess that since then my perspective on disability and frailty has never been the same”.
The project carried out in Puglia by the Compagnia Teatro Patologico together with the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese foresees, alongside the staging of the show “Medea”, also a meeting in the morning in schools and a meeting with the public in the theater after viewing the show in all cities . The meetings will be attended by Domenico Iannaccone, Dario D’Ambrosi and the entertainment company. Appointment on 11 January in Massafra, Teatro Comunale, at 10 am meeting with schools and at 9 pm, Teatro Spadaro, show and meeting with the public; January 12 in Lecce, 11 am meeting with schools in the parish of San Giovanni Battista, 9 pm show and meeting with the public at the Apollo Theater. Here we also add a new appointment with the “Vengo anch’io” laboratory organized by the Fermenti Lattici association: a mini-review intended for children (divided into age groups 3 – 5 years and 6 – 10 years) for allow adults to enjoy the shows while children are busy in workshops and thematic itineraries. In this appointment we will ideally travel among the marvelous interweaving of classical myths and their eternal and spectacular creatures. The tour will end on 13 January in Bisceglie, at 10 am meeting with schools at the IISS “Sergio Cosmai” and at 9 pm show and meeting with the public at Politeama Italia.
The project proposed by Dario D’Ambrosi and his Teatro Pathologico, in collaboration with the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, is to stage a very particular version of Euripides’ “Medea”, at the conclusion of an intense and successful journey theater, that of the theater training school for disabled children “La Magia del Teatro”. The show features children with disabilities and professional actors, including Almerica Schiavo in the role of Medea, Dario D’Ambrosi in the role of Creon and Paolo Vaselli. The adaptation has as its central element the relationship between body and language: a body that becomes language and communication, thanks to the very important role that the live music of Francesco Santalucia and Francesco Crudele aka Papaceccio will play. The choice of the text and the subsequent experimental work demonstrate that D’Ambrosi’s work with children with disabilities is not only a form of therapy, but also the fantastic possibility of artistic and emotional expression, a place of aggregation and training exciting in which to play and have fun for real, in which disabled children were able to feel and finally be protagonists.
This very particular version of “Medea” in 2017 was also presented at the United Nations in New York on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 4). And Dario D’Ambrosi in 2018, in the seat of the Italian Embassy in the United Nations Headquarters, received the prestigious DESA recognition, in particular for the establishment of the First University Course in the World of “Integrated Theater of Emotion” . Actor, director and author of shows that represent the thoughts and behaviors of mentally ill people, he has been one of the most interesting theatrical phenomena on the national scene for over forty years.
Born in 1962 in Torella del Sannio (CB), he began his journalistic career in regional newspapers at a very young age. He was sent to the tip of “Ballarò” and “Presa Direct” (Rai3). He conceived and conducted, for seven editions, the investigative program “The ten commandments” and since 2019 he has been on air with “What am I doing here”, one of the most popular in-depth programs on RaiTre. He has been awarded the Ilaria Alpi Prize five times. In 2015 he won the Paolo Borsellino Prize and in 2017 the Goffredo Parise Prize. With the documentary film “Far from the eyes” he received prestigious international awards, winning in order: the Civis Media Prize in Berlin, the Real Screen Awards in Los Angeles and the Peace Jam Jury Awards in Montecarlo. In 2018 with “We are all mad”, an unsettling tale of madness, he won the Spello Film Festival. In 2019 the Experimental Center of Cinema-School of Cinematography awarded him an honorary diploma in Audiovisual Reportage. In 2021 he was awarded the Kapuściński Prize and in the same year the documentary film “The Odyssey” was awarded at the XIV edition of the Moige Prize. In 2022 he was among the winners of Il Premiolino, one of the oldest and most authoritative journalism awards.
His way of narrating draws inspiration from the best Italian documentary tradition and is halfway between neorealist cinema and journalistic narration of reality.

From a very young age he showed a great passion for the theater combined with an interest in the study of mental illness, so much so that he was interned for three months at the Paolo Pini psychiatric hospital in Milan to closely observe the behavior of psychopaths. From these two passions the formula of his theater was born, defined as “pathological theater” by one of those first critics who went as far as the space in via Ramazzini, in Rome, to attend his first works. The shows of the Teatro Pathologico tend to investigate madness, the real one of the sick, in order to restore, as D’Ambrosi himself claims, “dignity to the mad”.
Since 2016, he has founded the First University Course in the World of “Integrated Theater of Emotion” in collaboration with the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” with the Department of Psychiatry directed by Prof. Alberto Siracusano, a course of study entirely aimed to people with physical and mental disabilities.
For years D’Ambrosi has also worked as an actor for cinema and television and has directed some films. In 1997 he appeared in the TV movie Don Milani, alongside Sergio Castellitto. He is Angelo Lupi in Padre Pio by Giulio Base, while in Uno Bianca by Michele Soavi he is Commissioner Monti. He plays the role of the scourge of Christ in the famous film The Passion by Mel Gibson and plays the role of Chief Inspector Canton in the fiction Romanzo Criminale.
