Paulo Costa wanted to react to what happened during the last seconds of his fight with Luke Rockhold.
At the very end of the fight between the two men, Luke Rockhold, in a dominant position on the ground on Paulo Costa, performed a rather strange action. In fact, the American deliberately wiped his bloody face on his opponent’s. An attitude that will not have failed to challenge the spectators.
UFC #6 ranked middleweight Paulo Costa took a while to realize what his opponent had done during their fight. Nevertheless, the Brazilian made a point of reacting during the UFC 278 post-fight press conference, and it seems that he now has more perspective on the situation.
“It’s a very weird moment”
” I did not see him at the time of the fight“, said Costa. ” I just felt something on my face, but I was more concerned about blocking his arms so I wouldn’t get elbowed and punched in the face. But I felt something.”
” Now that I’ve seen, it’s a very disgusting scene. It’s a very weird moment.”
Moreover, Paulo Costa linked this ‘weird moment’ as he describes it to another rather peculiar moment.
” I also saw when [Yoel] Romero kisses [Rockhold] after beating him“, said Costa. ” It was the weirdest moment I had seen, but this one beat that moment. I don’t know why Luke did that. Maybe he was very frustrated and angry because he was losing the fight. But I took a very long shower after the fight.”
Despite this misadventure, Costa got another unanimous decision victory in the UFC, which could allow him to return to the race. Indeed, before this fight, ‘Borrachinha‘ was on a 2-game losing streak, one to defending division champion Israel Adesanya and the other to No. 3 Marvin Vettori.
‘The Eraser‘ on restraint?
UFC veteran and legend Luke Rockhold has announced his retirement at the end of this war. Also, given the signs of exhaustion shown by the American during the fight, Costa did not expect to go to the end of the 3 rounds.
” When I saw him put his hands on his knees and show how tired he was, I thought to myself this guy wouldn’t finish the fight“, said Costa. ” But somehow, maybe I didn’t put enough pressure on him. I let him survive a bit, scoring points round after round.”
What next for Paulo Costa?
Prior to the event, Costa announced that his fight with Rockhold was the last of his UFC contract, and that he didn’t know what his next career would be like. After the win, the organization’s president, Dana White, said he wanted to sign the former middleweight title challenger to a new contract. So it looks like Paulo Costa’s days in the UFC aren’t in jeopardy.
