The 10 Most Binge

With Halloween Ends releasing on October 14, fans should prepare for the event by watching the entire Halloween franchise, even those that have been retconned or have no significance for the latest rebooted trilogy. Some of that overkill may mean reliving the iconic scenes with literally every Laurie vs. Michael Myers battle or dissecting them for all the hidden details that let fans learn more about the hero and villain.

With Halloween also just a month away, it’s proving to be the perfect time to binge on an entire franchise for all the scares and terrors. From Saw to Scream, Redditors shared a few horror franchises that are the most binge-worthy.

The original film The Fly (1958) was based on the short story of the same name by George Langelaan, in which the screenplay follows a scientist who accidentally mixes his molecules with that of a fly. There were three original films then a remake followed by a sequel.

Even though these movies are dated and there haven’t been any additional remakes or sequels since the 80s, many horror fans who love the creature elements in horrors think this is one of the best sci-fi horror movie series. Reddit user Plastic-Pat said, “I watched ‘The Fly’ franchise a few weeks ago, and can’t recommend it highly enough. While some may lose their appetite, given the creature’s design, it makes for a day-or-two marathon rush, an experience like no other.

In the Hellraiser franchise, the characters in these horrors actually go to hell and back. In these films, everyone’s protagonist is Pinhead and his minions are known as Cenobites. There are ten episodes in this franchise with a remake coming to Hulu in October.

Pinhead is considered one of the scariest horror villains of all time, leading to a cult following from the series. Reddit user EmaDaCuz suggested viewers binge on this series, saying, “Hellraiser. All except Revelations. Thank me later. Revelations was the franchise’s worst sequel, likely due to the rushed development and release. Otherwise, fans love taking a long weekend to binge on these movies, mostly because Pinhead always steals the show with his terrifying antics.

In a case where humans are the monsters, the Scream horror movies are known as one of the best slasher movies of all time, paving the way for those who will follow it. They all feature the infamous killer Ghostface, but each film has a different slasher or more who terrorize the city. There are four installments in the original series with two more picking up last year and the year ahead.

Despite over a decade between the fourth and fifth installments, the most recent film has received mostly positive reviews from fans and critics alike for being a true legacy horror that pays homage to the original while appealing to the new distribution. Reddit user TempleToons said, “It’s less bulky (no need to commit to say 8 or 9 movies) and there’s good continuity between them and they’re all pretty good.” Unlike most horror franchises where there are retcons to previous films or straight forward reboots or remakes, the Scream franchise has been the most consistent, which will make the story binge easy to follow.

wrong turn

This Wrong Turn series follows a family of deformed hillbillies who kill people in the woods and use them as food. The original franchise had six installments, and there was a storyline reboot in 2021.

There are mixed opinions about this franchise among critics, but the series has a dedicated fan base that enjoys the spooky aspects of the overall storyline. Reddit user Laurahrah said, “They are so easy to binge watch. The first one is gold and they get campier as the series progresses, but I love them. The Wrong Turn series is one of the few horror franchises where the original cast doesn’t return, but instead there’s a new cast that the villains encounter in each film. Therefore, doing this binge-watch, there is always a new story for horror fans to enjoy and see if the characters have what it takes to survive, while the villains are conceptually the important aspect.

evil Dead

This demonic possession series features three installments in the original and two other films that are considered soft reboots of the original. There was also a three-season comedy series, Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which is based on the original concept.

Reddit user RadleyButtons said, “These are definitely some of the funniest horror movies you can watch. I recommend at least annual viewings of the trilogy. Considering the movies are a cult classic, this series is great for a quick binge, especially for a dose of horror and comedy. Plus, the appeal of Bruce Campbell’s charisma is enough to make this whole series something worth a marathon, as viewers watch Ash take on zombies with his chainsaw.

Child’s play

The Child’s Play franchise centers on a murderous doll, possessed by the spirit of a killer and criminal, Charles Lee Ray. There are seven films in the original series and a recent reboot that transformed the creepy doll into a terrifying high-tech doll.

This doll-owning franchise is one of the most popular, with a huge cult following. Reddit user JohnnyReeko said, “Childs Play was super fun to browse. Unlike many terrors that are downright creepy, the Child’s Play series is a bit more fun, especially the sarcastic yet manipulative energy coming from the villainous Chucky. With Season 2 of the Chucky series releasing in October, fans have the perfect opportunity to watch the entire series that preceded it and see how the monstrous villain has evolved since its introduction in the 1980s.

The Saw series follows serial killer Jigsaw who kidnaps victims and forces them into games, with the stakes being death or sacrifice a lot to get out alive. There are currently nine films in the series with a tenth confirmed in development.

Reviews for the franchise are mixed, and some horror fans are put off by the amount of gore in the films. However, there is a strong fanbase behind them who are fascinated with the storyline and the concept. Reddit user DiscordianStooge said, “Saw is a much better show if you watch them all in a short amount of time. The best thing about this franchise is the attention to small details, and the binge watching might mean spotting those that were missed the first time around. Even though most sequels are underwhelming, it’s worth seeing how the plot elements connect, making the binge-watch marathon more enjoyable.

Halloween features the infamous psychopathic killer Michael Myers who kills those who get in his way on Halloween night. There are eight films in the original series with two Rob Zombie remakes and a reboot that began in 2018.

In a Reddit thread asking for Horror Frenzy recommendations, one user, Biff1996, said, “How did ‘Halloween’ (the franchise) get so few votes?[?] The sequels have had mixed reviews, and the constant reboot and remakes make it confusing for fans to follow the series to figure out which stories were canceled and which movies are connected. Nonetheless, the Halloween franchise remains one of the best horror series to binge because the slasher style has become a renaissance for the genre, and the brawl between Laurie and Michael carries the show, which should at least interest some viewers. .While some fans hated Halloween III due to the lack of Myers, audiences even grew to love this spinoff.

This horror franchise centers on the undead serial killer Freddy Krueger, who is sometimes more funny than scary and stalks teenagers in their dreams. There are eight films in the original franchise, including the standalone New Nightmare and a 2010 remake.

This creepy concept not only has a dedicated fan base, but leaves many viewers with their own nightmares. Reddit user Macias_pbls said, “Nightmare is obviously the GOAT because it’s the most creative and fun with the most charismatic slasher. These fans believe this is the greatest horror franchise, with an entertaining villain to keep viewers engaged throughout each film.

This franchise is the largest series, with 36 films released since the 1950s, with the last film being released last year. Each film features the legendary Godzilla, a prehistoric lizard monster. Although some may consider the Godzilla franchise to be more sci-fi than horror, the original Japanese version of the monster was actually a horror character before things changed with his monster duels.

The legendary creature is popular in Japanese culture and has been named a tourism ambassador. While it’s impossible to watch all of these movies in one or two sittings, Godzilla fans will pick their favorites for a monster-filled movie day. Reddit user XyeUnknown said, “Godzilla!…if you miss it…Gamera. Some fans love these movies so much that once they’re done with 36, they’ll switch to Gamera, a similar monster from the Japanese movies.
