“Accused”: what is this anthology series signed by the producer and screenwriter already behind “24 Hours” and “Homeland” worth?

Starring Michael Chiklis, this novelty’s first criminal case could have been rolled out with more nerves. But what really happened in the story is not what we thought!

A crime. Accused. A defense. Each episode of the “Accused” series, launched by the Fox channel this Sunday evening, has the first particularity of being the American adaptation of the English series (from the BBC) of the same name, which dates from 2010. Deuxio : we owe it to someone who knows how to do it in terms of suspense and complex plots since it is Howard Gordon, already “behind” these unique series that are “24 Hours” and “Homeland”. Finally, each episode deals with a specific criminal case.

The story of the first: a father, Scott Harmon, a renowned neurosurgeon, suspects his son Devon of being a psychopathic killer and preparing a massacre in his school. The child has always been “apart”, violent and isolated. One day, he comes across a notebook in which the teenager has written terrifying words. He talks about the humiliation a girl put him through and wants to make him pay a high price for it. Scott shows this to his wife Lynn, who joins him in his belief that Devon is deranged and dangerous.

This is where Scott takes him on a hike with the intention of killing him. What he can’t do… When they get home, Devon seems to have mellowed, but a few days later he does what his father dreaded so much. Armed to the teeth, he goes off to sow terror and bloodshed in his school, where he takes eight students hostage. On the phone, Scott tries to get him to back down, but there Devon tells him that he knows he intended to kill him during their little getaway in the mountains. And he shoots himself in the head. In court, Scott is accused of having been his son’s accomplice. But we will not reveal whether he is cleared or not.

On the other hand, we must admit that this “novelty” impresses less than “24 Heures” and “Homeland” did. Admittedly, his narration, often “in reverse”, is interesting, and it leads us on a beautiful false track. And in the end, it’s as if pieces had been missing for us to find Scott’s “journey” completely realistic and coherent. Which is camped by a particularly concerned Michael Chiklis (“The Shield” and the recent “Coyote”).

Once again, it is on the length that we will be able to judge the impact of this “Accused”, the second episode of which, directed by Marlee Matlin, is already coming this Tuesday, which will now be its broadcast day.
